As summer weather has hit us hard this week, I think it is very appropriate to share my own Gin Fizz recipe.
My love affair with this particular drink started in the mid-90's. I was barely 18 and often hanged out in Marseille's underground music venues, such as La Maison Hantee, Maybe Blues or Le Trolleybus. The latter was a Health and Safety hazard made of dusty tunnels and no air vents (just imagine the exposure to second-hand smoke!) and it was THE place to be seen if you were some kind of celebrity, apparently (not that I even saw one).
Personally, I liked it because it played rock music and some good old soul/funk classics. The Buzzcocks once played there too.
Anyway. I also loved their Gin Fizz. Of course I couldn't afford a drink back then but it was always my choice tipple when a stranger came along and offered me one.
Last year, I decided to try and recreate the taste that brought me so many good memories of careless (rather than care-free) teenage fun.
You will need:
- 50ml Gin (I use Sipsmith or Hendricks)
- 25 ml Tesseire sirop de citron (Waitrose has it in the squash aisle)
- 25 ml lemon juice
- Soda water (to top up)
This is what teenage French people used to get up to in 1994 after a night out clubbing. Eat cheese, smoke fags, drink water. I am the third one from the left, by the way!
Put all the ingredients in a large tumbler with lots of ice. Mix well. Put a Smashing Pumpkins CD on. Enjoy.
